Like many glass artists John Kitras started his artistic life creating pottery . After many years as a studio potter he took a glass blowing class and the rest is history.
In 1968, he visited the Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, where he was introduced to, and captivated by, the art of glassblowing.
This piece began simply by gathering 2000 degree molten glass onto the end of a “blowpipe”. Decoration with colored glass made using minerals such as copper, cobalt or gold were applied using techniques developed as long ago as 2000 B.C.
Johns unique designs are created with these colors as the glass is both mouth blown and hand formed into its final shape. After being gradually annealed, the glass is ground, polished and signed. This finished piece of art is then ready to grace your home and garden.
